History

The 1001 Nachts (also known as Ali Baba) was manufactured by the now-defunct German company Weber. It was first introduced in 1981 and was discontinued in 2000. The ride is a spinning roller coaster, which means that the cars rotate around a central axis as they move along the track. The 1001 Nachts has a height of 33 feet, a speed of 25 mph, and a length of 350 feet. It is themed after the Arabian Nights story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The cars are decorated to look like Arabian carriages, and the ride’s queue line features elements from the story.

The Rainbow was also manufactured by Weber but now is manufactured by Huss and was first introduced in 1982. It is still in production today. The Rainbow is also a spinning roller coaster, but it has a slightly different design than the 1001 Nachts. The Rainbow has a height of 40 feet, a speed of 30 mph, and a length of 400 feet. It is not themed to any particular story or event. The cars are simply decorated with bright colors and patterns.

Both the 1001 Nachts and The Rainbow were popular rides when they were first introduced. They were both well-received by riders and critics alike. However, the 1001 Nachts was discontinued in 2000 due to declining sales. The Rainbow, on the other hand, is still in production today and can be found at amusement parks around the world.

Here are some of the notable 1001 Nachts and The Rainbow rides:

  • The original 1001 Nachts ride was located at the Louisiana World’s Fair in 1984.
  • The Rainbow Ride is located in Legoland California.
  • There is a 1001 Nachts ride at the Pleasure Beach in Blackpool, England.
  • There is a Rainbow ride at the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Both the 1001 Nachts and The Rainbow are classic spinning roller coasters that have stood the test of time. They are sure to continue to entertain riders for many years to come.

Designs

1001 Nachts

The 1001 Nachts version of the ride is typically themed in the Arabian Nights theme with a magic carpet as the ride vehicle.  The ride swings back and forth until it gains enough speed to go over the top, riders are kept upright at all times, and experience a tickling of the stomach as the ride crests over the top, often times these rides will rotate and then switch directions before coming to a complete stop.  The rides are usually fitted with a restraint system that rests against the rider’s legs, holding them in place as the ride operates.

The Rainbow

The Rainbow by Huss operates very similar to the 1001 Nachts except the ride vehicles typically have riders all facing out from the ride, with the arm being behind the ride vehicle.

Safety Features

Double-lock anti-air shoulder harnesses or lap bars that lock in the absence of air.

Emergency power cut-off button.

The operator’s foot pedal completes the electric circuit, disabling control in the absence of the operator.
